Toll Brothers made good on its promise to abandon its planned 500-unit mixed-use project along the Gowanus Canal now that the toxic waterway has been designated a federal Superfund site. Revealed back in 2008, the megadeveloper's proposal made the Carroll Gardens side of the canal look like a lush paradise with all sorts of waterfront recreation that, if done now, would cause at least a few extra eyeballs to grow. Instead, the Brooklyn Paper reports Toll has walked away from its $5.75 million down payment on the land, choosing to avoid the stigma of a Superfund site and a government-run cleanup that could last longer than a decade. Oh well, more mutant goo for us!
