Allen Ginsberg Gives This East Village Rental a Backstory

Added to the things one could admire about Beat poet Allen Ginsberg is this: he spent 21 years living in this fourth-floor rental at 437 East 12th Street. (The fact that he had another apartment in the building in which to work probably made things a little more palatable.) The place is now on the rental market for $1,700/month, EV Grieve discovered. Though the listing makes a Ginsberg reference, the gut renovation means there probably isn't any lingering poetic genius floating around. But hey, something about Ginsberg's 1984 description of the view from his window sounds familiar: "Manhattan back-yard, wet brick-walled Atlantis sea garden's Alianthus...boughs waiving in rainy breeze, Stuyvesant Town's roof two blocks north on 14th Street - I focused on the raindrops on the clothesline." Stuy Town, connecting us to famous poets since 1984.
