Mosque Clears Landmarking Hurdle

New, 26 comments

This just in from Lower Manhattan: As expected, the Landmarks Preservation Commission has voted 9-0 not to grant protected status to 45 Park Place, a 152-year-old building targeted for demolition and replacement by Park51, the controversial 13-story Islamic center and mosque near the World Trade Center. Zoning allows the "ground zero mosque" to now be built as of right, but backers still need to raise $100 million for construction. Opponents are planning to file a lawsuit to block the project. More soon! [CurbedWire Staff]
