Oil spills are so on trend right now, so the Times wades into North Brooklyn's favorite polluted waterway, Newtown Creek. Some news: Now that the borough's other toxic canal has been given federal Superfund status, the same designation (triggering a cleanup) is expected for Newtown in September. Unlike in Gowanus, Mayor Bloomberg supports Superfunding here because there are no luxury condo developers to piss off. Some color from a Greenpoint local: "We all joke that we're going to end up with big lumps in our throat so we can afford our rents." Hilarious! [NYT]
