House Thievery

How to steal a house: forge the owner's name on a fake deed, turn the property over to a holding company, and file the required papers with the city register. That's what happened to 2206 Strauss Street, Garfield Gillings's fixer-upper in Brownsville, Brooklyn, which was stolen seven years ago by a group led by Maria Leyna Albertina, now in prison. Gillings is still trying to recover his stolen house, which has been resold several times and for which he's been unable to prove ownership. [NYT]
