Hudson River Pier Ruins Removed; Gem Tower to Shine in 2012

New, 10 comments

UPPER WEST SIDE?From high up in The Aldyn on the Upper West Side last month, we caught a nice view of the twisted remains of one of the old industrial piers in the Hudson River. Turns out those were the final days for Pier D. Gothamist and City Room both report that the rusty ruins were removed over the weekend due to structural issues, though it's not like kids were playing on the thing. Guess the condo owners at Riverside South will no longer be forced to look at a gritty reminder of the old days. [Gothamist; City Room]

MIDTOWN?Extell has said that it plans to start serious construction on its International Gem Tower in the Diamond District shortly, and today the developer sent out more details about the timeline for the 34-story tower. A "substantial portion" will be completed in 2011, and the entire commercial condo tower will be finished in 2012. The 11,000 tons of structural steel is being fabricated in West Virginia.
