The Nouveau Bowery may have its own perfume, but "the sweet scent of skid row transitioning to ultra-modernity" isn't so sweet to everyone. Preservationists frustrated by the destruction of buildings like 35 Cooper Square and by the luxury condo takeover of the neighborhood are pushing for the street's addition to the National Register of Historic Places. That would allow for state and federal tax credits in exchange for building rehab?but it wouldn't actually prevent those rehabs from being filled with condos and fancy retail. [NYT]
