A strip of chain retailers camping out on Atlantic Avenue between Court and Clinton Streets (Trader Joe's, Urban Outfitters, and last summer, Barneys New York Co-op) have pushed out the area's mom-and-pop antique shops and Middle Eastern restaurants, increasing the neighborhood's visibility but inevitably bumming out older residents and merchants. Average rent is now $45 per square foot, a 10% increase from two years ago, "but can run higher than $90." Meanwhile, neighborhood stand-by Sahadi's? Staying put, 27 years on. [Crain's]
