The plans for west side four-tower megaproject Gotham West were revealed this past spring. Now the actual construction is underway, and the Journal has updates on some of the nitty-gritty details on the 37-years-in-the-making project. The four towers will have a total of 1,258 apartments: 556 market-rate rentals, 682 affordable apartments, and 20 condos, all set to open in 2014. There will also be a 670-seat school, retail along 11th Avenue, and more than 10,000 square feet of gardens. The tallest tower is 31 stories; the developer originally wanted something taller, but settled on the 31-story height in exchange for taller-than-planned heights for the other three buildings. Those include setbacks, metal panels, and shadows to make them look smaller than they actually are. We have a feeling the neighbors will still notice.
