One method for getting rid of overflowing trashcans in the subway: remove them altogether! The MTA is considering doing just that, and are testing the theory at the Main Street station on the No. 7 line in Flushing and the 8th Street N/R station in Manhattan. The agency has too much garbage on its hands: an MTA official said he can't run more than "eight trash trains at night without reducing already sparse service to an unacceptably low level."
