The Journal checks in on the extreme makeover of the public plaza on the south side of 42nd Street between Sixth Avenue and Broadway. The plaza actually breaks most of planner William H. Whyte's rules for public plazas?it has fixed seating and several grade changes, for example. Up next for the plaza: 120,00 square feet of retail space, to open in fall 2012. Something else Whyte probably wouldn't approve of. [WSJ]
