The New York City schools chancellorship no longer comes with a free townhouse, but in the world of private schools, that perk is alive and well. This week's Times Appraisal column is all about 229 Baltic Street, the Cobble Hill townhouse that sold to Saint Ann's for $3.8 million last year. The house (right; photo via PropertyShark) is now home to the school's new headmaster, Vincent Tompkins.
It sounds like the home's in pretty good shape, too. According to the old listing, which features a few teensy interior photos, the house contains a garden apartment topped by a triplex, with an "elegant parlor floor?designed for entertaining with an expansive living room, formal dining room, and kitchen in the extension. There is a deck off the kitchen with stairs to a landscaped garden." The whole place got a renovation in 2006 from Baxt Inqui Architects. Nice digs!
