Former Studio of Color Field Painter Barnett Newman For Sale

The abstract expressionist painter and sculptor Barnett Newman passed away back in 1970, which means that he worked in this loft at 35 White Street before the neighborhood was all cool and DeNiro-fied. Now his former studio has been given a slick makeover, with two not-quite-bedrooms—note the sliding walls—and spacious, modern kitchen and bathrooms. The same bones that made this place such a desirable art studio remain, like 12-foot ceilings, two exposures, and 11 enormous windows, but modern additions like central air conditioning, built-in stereo, and a washer/dryer unit make it more livable. All that livability costs though: $2.2M.
