City officials have announced that they'll spend $14 million of approximately $20 million left in federal funds (earmarked for rebuilding downtown after 9/11) to tear down Pier 42 on the East River. The 600-foot-long pier shed--which has stored bananas, newspapers, and almost WTC construction debris--will be demolished to boost the larger, $140 million esplanade and pier project running between the Manhattan and Williamsburg Bridges.
