Following last week's announcement of the modular, pre-fab design for the B2 tower at Atlantic Yards, archicritic Justin Davidson takes a long, hard look at the oeuvre of high-achieving mixmasters SHoP Architects. To paraphrase, the firm and its five partners have "spent years honing a virtuosity aimed at convincing skeptics that a fantastical design is feasible" and while many architects "treat their buildings as oversize snowglobes to be admired from afar; SHoP designs for the sensual experience of being there." One notable tidbit: SHoP co-founders Gregg Pasquarelli and Kimberly Holden live in an apartment in SHoP-designed Porter House. [New York Mag]
