City Room takes a look at this year's dearly departed "swiss cheese" terminal at LaGuardia Airport, once called "a new design for a giant ice cream cone." Opened in 1964, the tower and its companion central terminal building were constructed as part of a $119 million upgrade in advance of travelers visiting New York for the World's Fair. Though the air traffic control tower was truncated to a four-story stub this summer, you can still peep its portholes from Concourse D. [City Room]
