The city is cracking down on property tax exemptions for non-profit groups by attempting to verify which non-profits are legit. How the city is doing this: questionnaires sent to 12,000 property owners listed as exempt, giving them until December 5 to respond. So far, 3,000 owners haven't replied, which means their exemptions would disappear July 1. The crackdown is a response to the arrest of a Correction Department chaplain for the theft of federal rent subsidies; the city now plans to survey exempt property owners every year. [NYP]
