Rent Wars

New, 4 comments

Despite various local politicians' efforts, landlord Gary Brown has evicted five rent-stabilized tenants from 221 West 16th Street. The renters were paying $200 to $300/month and were evicted under a legal provision that allows building owners to take over rent-stabilized apartments for their own use. State Senator Tom Duane said tourists showed up Monday night to use the apartments, but apparently the long-term plan is to combine all of the fourth- and fifth-floor apartments into one duplex.
