The Curbed Cup, our annual award to the New York City neighborhood of the year, is kicking off with 16 'hoods vying for the prestigious fake trophy. This week we'll have two matchups per day, and all the results and the full tourney bracket will be reviewed on Friday. Voting for each pairing ends in the wee hours the next morning. Let the eliminations commence!
A few South Street Seaport-area residents wrote in with impassioned pleas for the 'hood's inclusion in the Curbed Cup this year, and we can't blame 'em. The neighborhood's major redevelopment still appears to be stuck in the planning stages, but there are plenty of smaller changes happening. Rutgers Slip is next up for a bit of a makeover, and the Blue Man Group-founded Blue School is moving. (The former USPS building at One Peck Slip is becoming a school, too.) And then there's the arrival of events like 4 Knots.
The Seaport's opponent in this first round is Roosevelt Island. It's been in the news lately as the possible home of a multi-billion-dollar science campus from Stanford or Cornell, and the Main Street retail corridor is also finally headed for a redo. And the construction of Four Freedoms Park should wrap up next year. Let's put it to a vote:
