We were surprised by two things surrounding the reported imminent listing of The Kaiser's 3BR/3.5BA apartment in ultra-posh 50 Gramercy Park North: 1) He never moved into the place. 2) He was ready to take $5.5 million for the sixth-floor unit, a million bucks less than he paid for the park-fronting pad. Turns out that Lagerfeld himself was also surprised, at least by that second part. He now tells Women's Wear Daily, "I never heard anything about such a price, nor has my business manager," and he's decided not to list the apartment at all?which might put a damper on tonight's book reading/cocktail party in the apartment, meant to show off the property to a crowd instructed to dress "Chanel chic." Guess giving up a key to Gramercy Park is not in for spring.
UPDATE: Our friends at Corcoran just issued a statement: "This evening's book reading at 50 Gramercy Park North, Apt. 6A, has become a private, social event and is not open to real estate press as the apartment is not on the market. We will be in touch should circumstances change."
