Yesterday the Wall Street Journal reported that the Apollo Theater is in talks to take the top floor of a planned three-story retail complex next to its legendary 125th Street digs. The Apollo needs to raise $12 million to get in on the project, and the additional space would be used for offices and community education programs. Developer Grid Properties is searching for retailers to take the rest of the space (construction could begin in six months), and based on the rendering of the Apollo Arts Center on the company's website, the execs?or architects, at least?have iPads on the brain. As DNAinfo points out, Grid built the Harlem USA retail complex, which has attracted businesses like New York Sports Club and AMC's Magic Johnson Theaters. Can it lure an even bigger fish uptown?
