What's Hot Right Now for Famous People: Renting!

New, 11 comments

If there's anyone in this city who doesn't have to check the Rent vs. Buy Index when making real estate decisions, it's a celebrity. Still, short-term employment, and perhaps a dash of commitment phobia, puts many a boldface name in the market for a pricey rental. And several of them have just signed leases, Jennifer Gould Keil reports in today's Post. First up is Jim Carrey, who's in New York filming "Mr. Popper's Penguins." He's decided to go for some celebrity leftovers: specifically, the 2BR, 2.5BA, full-floor condo at Richard Meier's 176 Perry Street where Hugh Jackman once rented. Carrey's paying $25,000/month on a lease that goes until May?a rate that's actually a discount.
Also on the rental bandwagon is Robin Williams, who'll be debuting on Broadway soon in "Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo." Speaking of tigers and zoos, Williams' rental is in the headline-making Rushmore, site of an ongoing court battle involving typos and the return of buyers' deposits. He'll be paying about $15,000/month for a 2,489-square-foot 4BR that was listed for close to $4 million.

There's one celeb still on the prowl: A-Rod, whose real estate hunt is starting to rival some of the more epic ones we've seen. The 15 Central Park West renter and girlfriend Cameron Diaz were recently spotted viewing Village real estate, and the Post says 400 West Street has caught A-Rod's eye. That's the Novogratz-designed townhouse currently asking $18.95 million, but apparently A-Rod would still prefer to rent. Wouldn't they all?
