And to think that this remote piece of Hell's Kitchen property was once earmarked for a boring private school! It's Day 2 of Danish architect Bjarke Ingels's great pyramid party, and now that the shock has subsided we can get more into the details of the courtyard-sporting colossus. Late yesterday developer Durst Fetner Residential issued the official press release on what is being called West 57th, saying it will have 600 rental apartments, each one with a bay window and/or a balcony. The architect of record is SLCE Architects, and Starr Whitehouse Landscape Architects has come aboard to handle all that greenery. How is West 57th being received by local architects? With great sadness...for the building's expediter. OK, now everyone be quiet, because the movie is about to begin.
The Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) has unleashed this animated fly-through of the design to the public, minus the Jay-Z soundtrack. Prepare to be mind-boggled. But remember, while those north-facing terraces looking out onto ConEd's old IRT Powerhouse are pretty amazing, five new skyscrapers will eventually spring up a few steps away.
