San Gennaro Gets Green Light for a Full Feast

New, 6 comments

Mayor Bloomberg has a message for the shop owners and residents of Nolita: Mangia! Putting an end (until next year!) to the bitter fight over whether the annual San Gennaro street festival should be cut off at Kenmare Street, sparing trendy Nolita from Little Italy's grandest tradition/shitshow, Bloomberg has granted a permit for a full-length festival this September, the Post reports. That's 11 more days and nights of Oreo-frying action along Mulberry Street from Canal Street up to Houston Street. Despite the defeat, San Gennaro opponents did get something: The festival will end 30 minutes earlier, at midnight, on Fridays and Saturdays, and begin 30 minutes later, at 11:30 a.m., every day.

No need to review all the nasty things that were said during the debate. Instead, let's take a look at how San Gennaro's fiercest supporters are celebrating the news on their Facebook page. Writes one, "We have to start to rebuild the unity, culture, and heritage of Little Italy that was attack by the opposition. Let this event be a lesson to learn. The battle was won but the war still goes on." Adds another, far more succinctly: "BYE BYE YUPRATS." Should be good times on Mulberry Street come September! Maybe the boutiques can turn a negative into a positive by bottling eau d'empanada?
