Ten years ago today, Staten Island's Fresh Kills landfill was closed by Mayor Rudy Giuliani as a thank you to the borough, and the city is still feeling the effects. WNYC points out how the closing of what was once the world's largest landfill led to the modern-day controversies about new waste transfer stations, like the one slated for the Meatpacking District's Gansevoort Peninsula (trust us, it's more interesting than it sounds). The landfill is now undergoing a 30-year conversion to Freshkills Park, if it doesn't sink first. [WNYC]
