The Dream Downtown is Slowly Waking Up in Chelsea

New, 6 comments

Dreams will be coming true this summer in Chelsea, where the new Dream Downtown Hotel has announced its presence with signage over 355 West 16th Street. This modernist stainless steel cheesegrater, an iconic 1966 Albert Ledner building re-imagined by Handel Architects, is set to open in the second quarter and will be the flagship outpost for Vikram Chatwal Hotels. The 316 rooms offering "dream sequences and serene accommodations" are shown at the still-under-construction Dream Downtown website. We're looking forward to the poolside Terrace Suites, with beach club cabanas right outside.
Entering the Dream lobby, guests will look up at a glass ceiling that doubles as the translucent bottom of the pool. Higher up will be the rooftop bar and beach club, with panoramic views. But not for everyone: the rooftop pool/club is now the focus of a $30 million lawsuit over a questionable handshake. Dining will happen at the MSR restaurant, under the guidance of Dr. Miguel Sánchez Romera, a neurologist-chef serving up high-concept organic vittles supplied by the on-site greenhouse. That part certainly sounds like something from a dream. Opening rates are said to be set at $395/night and reservations will be available "in the near future." In other words: dream on, for now.
