Hotel Chelsea's Hidden Penthouse Steps Into the Spotlight

For all the attention we've paid to the Hotel Chelsea over the years, the building can still surprise us. Here's how: it turns out that a studio atop the landmark building had a 2BR penthouse added to it in 2001. Apartment Therapy pointed out a Chelsea rooftop makeover, and a little sleuthing helped us pinpoint the building, where David Bard, son of famed former Hotel Chelsea manager Stanley Bard, filed for a 546-square-foot addition back in 1996. The Landmarks Preservation Commission confirms that it approved the addition, from Fradkin and McAlpin Architects, the same year. The architects' images of the project, completed in 2001, are above. Looks a little like a condo, doesn't it?
