The Brooklyn Megatunnel

Last night a community meeting was held on the rehabilitation of the rotting triple-cantilever portion of the BQE that some Brooklyn Heights residents fear will swallow their historic homes. That land-grabbing option is off the table, but nine other proposals are still kicking around, with estimated costs ranging from $200 million to $20.7 billion, Brownstoner reports. The most expensive option: An "outboard tunnel connecting Greenpoint (BQE exit 33) to the north and Sunset Park to the south (65th Street)." That sounds even better than hiding the highway with civic art! Some sort of plan is expected to be in place by 2018. [Brownstoner]
