The destruction of the 1928 Drake Hotel building to make way for a new project from developer Harry Macklowe was hard enough for preservationists to take?but just as controversial was the potential demolition of some nearby townhouses on East 57th Street also acquired by Macklowe. Brace, archigeeks, because the demolition of one of those townhouses, 44 East 57th Street, has just been approved. According to the Post, new Drake owner CIM Group is also eyeing a few of the townhouses it doesn't yet own on the block, in the hope of being able to create a facade stretching 150 feet along 57th Street.
All the maneuvering might be for a 70-story building, and the latest rumor is that the lower floors will include a hotel, with luxury condos above it. Mandarin Oriental, Taj, and One&Only Resorts are some of the hotel operator names that have been floated so far. But can spas and pillow menus calm preservationist ire?
