Manhattan's Community Board 11 just completed a survey that said the East Harlem retail scene is about as exciting and useful as Randy Jackson's American Idol commentary. But what's this? A Wall Street Journal story claiming East 125th Street's retail row is being reinvented with grocery stores, healthy cafés and clothing boutiques? What do we believe?! Better question: What new name has been slapped on the neighborhood to distance East 125th Street from its lackluster past? That would be New Harlem East, coined by the business owners who are apparently not afraid of getting fined. Well, at least it's catchier than the East Harlem Media, Entertainment and Cultural Center, the huge mixed-use megaproject that will one day truly change the 'hood.
