Columbia's Inwood Sports Complex Gets City Approval

New, 2 comments

When it comes to university expansion plans and city approvals, all eyes have been on NYU this week, as it faced down the LPC to get the thumbs-up for its makeover of the open space between I.M. Pei's Silver Towers. But the uptown university expansion involving starchitecture also faced a city gauntlet this week, so it's Columbia's turn for attention.

DNAinfo reports that the City Council gave Columbia the nod (in a 46-1 vote) to build its 47,700-square-foot field house at 218th Street and Broadway in Inwood. The building will be part of the university's Baker Field athletic complex. In addition to the Steven Holl-designed sports center, there will be a publicly-accessible waterfront park. The neighbors are still apparently negotiating for greater access to the Columbia facilities, but they might need to be nicer about the design.
