Gated UES House Kept the Poor Away Before Madonna Made it Cool

New, 8 comments

We've all been enthralled with Madonna's renovation of her now gated Upper East Side townhouse, but we forget that just because she's famous doesn't mean she's the first to do it. This townhouse at 171 East 73rd Street has had a "cast-iron fence enclosed front court" since 1924! That's back when Madonna was just a toddler, far too young to be planning her townhouse renovations. Of course this place is a bargain compared to Madonna's $32,000,000 mansion, listed at a meager $7,850,000. A quick rundown of the place lets us know that it has 4,740 square feet and its own zen garden. Not bad, not bad at all.
