Grand Central Terminal Apple Store Might Still Happen

New, 11 comments

Mac fans got excited and then abruptly not so excited when rumors of an Apple store in Grand Central Terminal came and went earlier this year. But the possibility of a Grand Central Apple outpost lives again! According to the Journal, the MTA will be putting out a request for proposals today for a tenant to take two balconies on the terminal's north and east sides. The Charlie Palmer Métrazur restaurant that currently occupies the space is closing July 1?but any new tenant of the space would have to pay Palmer for the lease, which goes until 2019. The price could be a hefty one.
The MTA tells the Journal it has spoken to Apple about taking the space and is hopeful the company will bid. But contrary to earlier rumors, the space is only 15,230 square feet, so it won't be Apple's largest location. It will involve Landmarks Preservation Commission approvals if Apple has any changes in mind for the space, so better start sending the LPC those cube-shaped subliminal messages now.
