Students Try a New Kind of Rooftop Addition: The Solar Roofpod

New, 2 comments

A group of 100 students from City College are entering their plan for "Solar Roofpods" in the Solar Decathlon put on by the Department of Energy. Their basic idea is that the rooftops of low-to-mid-rise buildings in the city are underutilized in relation their access to sunlight. Their plan? Build a 746 square-foot penthouse on the roofs of these buildings, where solar energy will be used for heating, cooling and hot water. There would also be rooftop gardens and a system for retaining and recycling rainwater. A prototype is going to be set up in Washington D.C from September 23- October 2 of this year. You can find more information on the project here. We're liking what we see, so far.
