Today's the day, of course, of the NYU scoping session, the kick-off for the next phase of the university's NYU 2031 expansion plan. So while everyone is looking over toward the proposed Greenwich Village superblocks, NYU is...making plans for its expansion into other neighborhoods. The Journal has the deets.
NYU has had its eye on expanding within Downtown Brooklyn and the First Avenue Health Corridor all along, even though the areas were designated as "remote" possibilities on the initial expansion plan. In Downtown Brooklyn, the university will indeed be taking another 120,000 square feet at the MetroTech Center, a 20 percent increase for NYU's Polytechnic Institute campus. And on First Avenue at 25th Street, NYU has chosen architects Kohn Pedersen Fox and EYP Architecture and Engineering to design a 170,000 square foot building that will be home to NYU's bio-engineering program, nursing school, and a dental school expansion. (Above, an earlier rendering of what an NYU First Avenue expansion might look like.) Up next for NYU: Governors Island?
