As part of Curbed Outdoors Week 2011, we're looking to settle the question once and for all of the city's best dog run. Readers nominated their favorite dog runs for the chance to score $500 worth of pet gear. Here now, the final nominee; coming up this afternoon, the vote.
Shall I compare thee to a summer's day? Seriously, there is no better dog run in New York City than that in Tompkins Square Park. What makes it so nice here? It's a well established and aesthetically pleasing park, with large overgrown trees and plenty of benches to sit on. Sitting on a bench watching your dog play surrounded by greenery, one is momentarily rescued from the clamor of the city.
The actual surface of the dog run itself is very clean and well maintained. Don't try any funny stuff, like having an agressive dog, as the longtime regulars politely will ask you to leave. That doesn't mean you can't try and come back another day when fido is acting more civilized.
Having moved from the LES to Brooklyn, this is the single thing I miss. I sometimes think about how I could transport my dog to this pastoral wonderland of the East Village. Until I figure that out, my dog and I are doomed to fester in the disease-ridden aggressive dog magnet which is McCarren Park. So it goes.
