BROOKLYN?We're never unhappy to have an excuse to write about Wallabout (once labeled as the next Dumbo), and today we have one. The Landmarks Preservation Commission has approved the Wallabout Historic District, along Vanderbilt between Myrtle and Park, south of the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The district includes 55 pre-Civil War homes, built mostly between 1849 and 1855. In this case, the history being commemorated is a bit grim, though?as many as 11,000 soldiers and sailors died on British prison ships anchored in Wallabout Bay during the Revolutionary War.
