Of course Nicolai Ouroussoff couldn't leave the Times archidesk without weighing in on Rem Koolhaas' CCTV Tower in Beijing. The fire-ravaged project has long been a favorite of Nicolai's, and that hasn't changed. In fact, "at moments monumental and combative, at others strangely elusive, almost retiring, it is one of the most beguiling and powerful works I’ve seen in a lifetime of looking at architecture." High praise, and not a zinger to be found! While Nicolai and Rem are trading friendship bracelets, we have to admit that the tower's V.I.P. helipad does sound cool. [NYT]
