The city's New Housing Marketplace Plan -- an initiative started to create 165,000 affordable housing units by 2014 -- is ahead of schedule, with three-quarters of its construction goals met. The plan seeks to benefit half a million New Yorkers, which Bloomberg joked is "more people than who live in Miami.” At the end of the last fiscal year on June 30, NHMP had invested $1.3 billion in creating or preserving 15,827 units, surpassing the annual goal by 1,100 units.
