The 30-year conversion of Staten Island's Fresh Kills landfill into a park is about to get a little help from the art world. The Land Art Generator Initiative, "a project aimed at integrating renewable energy infrastructure with public art," will host its 2012 competition at Freshkills. The competition takes submissions of designs that are pretty and generate clean energy, like a past LAGI winner that proposed nine solar-powered pyramids to generate energy for houses in Abu Dhabi. Sounds cool and all, but the Freshkills Park haiku contest is still our favorite. [Gotham Gazette]
