37 years ago, architect Louis Kahn designed a plan for a monument of such proportion that its location, Welfare Island, would forevermore be known as something a little more, shall we say, presidential. Now Roosevelt Island's namesake memorial has taken shape, as evidenced by the latest from Untapped Cities, who toured the FDR Four Freedoms Memorial last week after the opening of Southpoint Park. "The Room," that bunker of granite blocks at the southernmost tip of the island, has come under fire for its less-than-approachable Brutalist design. But lo! It makes more sense from the inside, looking out, framing the city's skyline to the west and directing visitors to look at the giant head of FDR himself. (NB: Roosevelt bust TK.)
