EV Grieve mourns the further mallification of the Bowery with the news this morning that 7-Eleven is moving to the neighborhood. The convenience store chain has started work on 351 Bowery, also known as 52 East 4th Street of Scarano-on-the-Bowery fame. This is just the tip of the frozen Slurpee iceberg: 7-11 has pledged to open 15-20 new stores in Manhattan by 2012 and 100 in the next five years. Wonder if they'll be selling the new Soho beer marketed to "alternative 21-to-35-year-olds"?
