West 33rd Street Tabernacle Site Has Budget Hotel Future

A tipster alerted us yesterday to excavation machinations at 325 West 33rd Street, a site that's been sittin' empty since 2009 when the Romanesque Glad Tidings Tabernacle church (circa 1868) was razed to make room for 250-room hotel called Cambria Suites. The lot has seen no action since 2009, when surveyors from DOB were seen sniffing around the property, then owned by PLC Partners who had a building permit on file listing Helpern Architects as the hotel designer. We've got queries out to aforementioned parties, but the DOB permits on-site tell a different story: the only thing we have to look forward to is a brand new Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott. The parcel was sold in September 2010 to a new developer, Palmetto Hospitality of Manhattan.
