Local urban issues non-profit Municipal Art Society of New York (MAS) awarded its annual design prize last week, with two winners for the best new building of 2011: Lincoln Center's Hypar Pavilion and the Norman Foster-designed Sperone Westwater gallery on the Bowery. Best Restoration honors went to Caples Jefferson Architects for their addition to a Philip Johnson structure at Queens Theatre in the Park, and Pratt's Myrtle Hall was awarded as a "neighborhood catalyst."
In the five years since its inception, the overall MASterwork prize has gone to heavy hitters like Renzo Piano (New York Times HQ), Morphosis (41 Cooper Square), and Frank Gehry (IAC building). Co-winners Diller Scofidio + Renfro and Foster + Partners have likewise been named by MAS as the best of the best, DS+R for Alice Tully Hall in 2010 and Foster for the Hearst Tower in 2007.
