Rental Broker Blues

New, 13 comments

Writer and former lawyer Michelle Dean has a bone to pick with rental brokers, on a micro- and macro-level. Her argument boils down to this: no oversight, no one policing Craigslist broker scams, and little accountability by individual brokers. Even with the vacancy rate at under 1% for July, Dean did manage to find an apartment with no broker fee, but her plea may ring a bell: "I'm not a cheap or even a frugal person, but there’s something about the idea of paying a broker for performing no service whatsoever that activates my latent skinflint genes. Why isn’t this business model completely goddamn illegal?" [The Awl]
