The Department of Transportation is ready to give a solid A+ to the Union Square pedestrian plaza. Residents and businesses were, as usual, not on board with the potential traffic jams the redesign's lane closures could cause. But the DOT says no local businesses have actually registered complaints, and speeding is down on Broadway between 20th and 19th Streets. The number of cyclists has gone up by 33 percent on weekends. According to the Union Square Partnership, 35 percent of area businesses had no opinion on Union Square's reconfiguration?the stat we have the hardest time believing. [City Room]
