Hear that sound? It's the death knell of the 60-year-old parking meter, or at least the ability to park for free because of a broken one. In its place comes the Multispace Muni-Meter, "a solar-powered box, equipped with Wi-Fi, that can handle eight parking spaces at once and can shut itself down on free-parking Sundays," which the city is now installing throughout Manhattan. The remaining old-timey meters will be repurposed as bike racks. [NYT]
