The owner of the unfortunately-named Rat Island, a 2.5-acre parcel between City Island and Hart's Island in the Bronx, is selling it for a song. Red Brennan, "a 40-year marine contractor who salvaged barges and stored equipment there," tried to unload it in 2009 for $300,000 to no avail. Now it's hitting the auction block on October 2 with three small caveats: the highest point is underwater during severe storms, the rocky outcropping presents a building challenge, and it was supposedly home of a quarantine hospital for yellow-fever patients in the 1880s.
