Building owner Gary Barnett bought Upper West Side classic the Belnord in 1994, before he became a big deal in the development world, and sunk many millions into its restoration?many more millions than the building's rental income can actually cover. Barnett stopped paying the debt service on the building in May and might end up leaving the property. The twist to the story: the tenants are unhappy about this. They rave to the Times about what a great landlord Barnett has been, which should at least be a comfort to the residents of his newer, bigger projects. [NYT]
