Today is a day of slightly creepy things?including the latest photo essay from photographer/blogger Nathan Kensinger, who has compiled several years' worth of photos of abandoned corners of Governors Island. He writes, "Half of the approximately 100 buildings on the island are in some state of decay, including a supermarket, auto body repair shop, movie theater and hospital. Many of the other buildings are controlled ruins, minimally cleaned up to allow limited public access. Walking through this deserted landscape is a surreal experience, especially when considering its close proximity to the bustling financial center of lower Manhattan." Some of the ruins are headed for demolition in the Governors Island makeover, leaving one less place to imagine the world without us. Click through for more photos; best not to look right before bed.
